Fair play to Shannon airport cutting 300 acres of ground to make bales for local farmers at a low discounted price

    Aviation fuel

Credit where it's due, the type of joined up needed in these times. 300 acres isn't a bad start

    €12 a bale, I heard.

20 years from now, they'll be telling how 2013 was so bad they had to cut the grass in the airport to feed the local cattle.

Yep was just thinking same. Often hear father talking about the real bad years back in the 50,s and 60,s.
after the last few years we have plenty of stories of our own,

Waiting now for the GAA to postphone matches, let the pitches grow a bit then move in with the balers.............. Nah, didn't think so either.

    Excellent point.

Trying to think of other bits of land that could be used like this.

I can't help but think that there is surely a fair bit of land lying idle for one reason or another that could be utilised relatively easily.

I wonder if there is any government land that could be used this way - maybe some Army land

Catholic Church is supposedly the 2nd biggest landowner in the country. Wouldn't be surprised if there was opportunities there.

Rather than spending money on imports and money going out of the country would surely make far more sense to try and keep the money in the country.

Surely there must be some NAMA-controlled land?

Maybe come up with a list of possible spots and submit them to Covney/have the Dept of Ag co-ordinate.

There's a definite opportunity here to improve things if a little effort was made.

It uses to be baled as hay and sold.
I know my brother in law worked for a Meath contractor who did the work.

Fair bit of dog **** in some if it, he used to say.

the GAA wouldnt be letting foreign breeds (of cattle) benefit from their pitches.

    fair play to Shannon

The GAA let their Bullocks and Heifers loose on the grass about two months ago!

Take a bow Shannon Airport. It is great to see some joined up thinking in this country on how we can help each other when times are tough.

Dogsh1t will spread Neospora, which will cause cows to abort, so be carefull where you take free silage from.

There is a 100 acres growing wild in the middle of every racecourse in the country.....that's another 2500+ acres......farmers and horsey boys would beneft.........a great pr exercise and would pull in the crowds too..........

That stuff was round here for years and there was more than dog sh1t in it
The same contractor used to cut Dublin airport and a farmer made silage of it supposed to have been a fair whiff of aviation fuel off it

I drew hay out it in the early 70's ,(nuffield 10/60 and pulling 2 sedan trailers, the trailer with the best brakes was behind the tractor and a rope to the driver;s seat) trailer lights werent even heard of!

was a local guy involved then
all I remember was the hay was all moss , glorious weather that year we were burning up at home

following years I know a guy who drew silage off it , was a flag man on duty to let him exit, got their signals mixed up and was a "near miss" with jet coming in to land

"near miss" could have meant 400 to 500 yards but still all silage operation was stopped for some time

The first time my oul boy saw me walking was when he came back from cutting silage on the runways in Shannon in '74. He's a bit put out that he wasn't asked for a price this time:D.

I know of a neighbour who grazed the airport when it was being built.. he had the cattle there for weeks. There were no tags or cards at the time.

The Airport put a guy watching the cattle to see who was bringing them water. As soon as he went to lunch, the Neighbour came down of the site and fed them everyday. This went on for weeks until there was talk of them being impounded.. Then the dissappeared overnight.

When he was eventually caught up with he told them barefaced lies that Paddy Hillary said it was alright. They gave chasing him at that stage.

.....and grazing the rough would leave it much easier for them to find their balls

This would only lead to extra hazards on the fairways. What is the best club to use when the ball is lodged in dung?

Whatever one best resembles a splashplate. That putter Sandy Lyle had at the masters comes to mind.

I heard they tried the same thing in Shannon years ago and no cattle would eat the bales it was so polluted from aviation fluid. Wonder if that's true, and if it is will it happen again?

Have cut the grass there a few times working for a Cork company. Everything was just left on the ground when we were done, but hardly any litter or dog **** in it.

Reminds me of the collusion with a cattle truck and an airplane in Shannon airport a good few years ago, when loading animals onto a plane. As far as im aware there is a lean on a farm of a few million quid after that episode. as for the people involved :D

This is the second time we cut it, April 1999 before. Not enough to go around the only problem both times really. ESB Moneypoint quoting Heath and Safety +EPA as a no go.No surprise from them!!

I'd imagine it would be whipped away and fed so fast that it wouldn't have time to ferment.

I heard it was Fr. Harry Bohan that asked the airport for the grass. Fair play to him.

He has answered the prayers of many Clare farmers so.
