Do I need a new motherboard?

Hi, I was installing a second drive into my Dell Studio 1737. I did not have the proper screws and used different ones. Long story short I still had the battery on the laptop and got this funny smell, not a burning smell but what I can kind of describe as TCP. So I am assuming that I shorted something. Now there is no power in laptop, when I plug in mains charger the blue light at the tip goes out suggesting that something is shorting. There was no sparks or smoke that I could see.

Dug up a video on stripping it and took it apart. Had a look at the motherboard where I suspected the damage (if any) to be. I could get a smell from the board but no sign of shorting or blackness. Put it back together again but still the same.

My question is what is the chance the motherboard is fried? Can anyone recommend a decent repair shop where I could get a quote for repair?
