The hard drive in my macbook pro is about to die, its making a loud ticking noise a lot of the time. Are there any fixes for this apart from a new hard drive? Is it possible to simply copy absolutely everything (OS and all) from the onboard hard drive to an external one and just use that instead.

No, but it should be possible to clone the hard drive to a second one and then install the new one.

very easy to do it yourself.I upgraded my drive last night took all off 10 mins to swop drives and you can clone the drive while watching a movie.Just pick up the enclosure and drive and away you go.

Ok thanks guys, I think I'll buy an external HD tomorrow and clone the onboard one before it dies. I'm really just prolonging the inevitable though, this laptop is buggered. Its split at the side and the battery is screwed as well.
