Does anyone know when trading in a car that has been involved in an accident, do the dealers do a search on the car to verify what you tell them is correct?
If they do a search on the car and discover it has been involved in an accident, how much details can they obtain about the accident?
    Thanks

Yes they will, they all have access to a car history site.

    Thanks

Once they find out that they've been lied too they won't bother buying the car.

Hang on a second - if a dealer sold a car knowing it had been in an accident and "said nothing", there'd (rightly) be war. Why shouldn't the same apply to someone selling a car back to a dealer? To encourage someone to say nothing is fraudlent at best, possibly illegal and potentially very dangerous. It's the first thing anyone (trader or private) will ask when buying a car anyway, so lying about it and getting found out later (if this crashed car was involved in another accident as a result of something from the original accident failing catastrophically) could land you in serious trouble.

There is no official car accident log in Ireland, some insurance companies share information but there's no official Cat A, B C, D write off database in Ireland.

I didn't actually volunteer the information and neither was I asked by the dealer. That made it hard for me to pose the question to the dealer about the car I was about to purchase but everything looked in good condition so I trusted the dealer. I did a quick search on the car I was to buy and all seemed fine. I'd say it was a close call and I'm glad all went off well for both dealer and me.

Was this traded into a main dealer?

Yes I traded it in to a main dealer.

Yes I traded it in to a main dealer.

Any harm asking how old the car was. All main dealers run background checks on the cars prior to purchase.

I'd imagine it never went on their forecourt

I was told that he had an interested buyer in my car and that buyer I understand was a tradesman! The car was 2004 reg. I haven't seen it on any website for sale since handing in the car

If the dealer filled in a SIMI form you are asked to declare if the car has been damaged and sign the form!
