Was driving along the M9 from Waterford and was taking the exit for Kilcullen when I spotted on the outer carriageway by the median a man walking his child in a buggy!!! He seemed to be trying to find the right moment to cross over the road and I guess go up the slip road.

Called the Guards and they were out looking for him already. Assume he got over safely as I heard nothing about an accident!

Definitely someone who could be charged with endangering a child's life.

There was something mentioned on 2FM's AA roadwatch at 6 this evening about a pedestrian walking on a motorway and the Gardaí were on their way to the scene. Didn't get the full story but i'd assume this was it. Absolute careless lunatics (the pedestrian)

Yeah AA road watch mentioned it.

On slightly similar incidents : there was a cyclist going through the Jack Lynch Tunnel at rush hour yesterday !!??

I seen it too and reported it to Gardai too. I blew the horn at him and he just looked at me with a blank expression, WTF??

    Absolutely crazy stuff.
I know the whole stopping on the hard shoulder was covered in another thread, but yesterday on the M4/M6 just after the toll there were 2 cars stopped in the hs. Seemed to be moving stuff from one car to the other. One guy had the drivers door fully open, projecting into the running carriageway. The other guy was walking from one car to the next on the live carriageway side, a couple of feet from the passing cars.
Obviously not as bad as walking with a buggy in the median, but ffs - are these people just thick? Is there anyway they can be prevented passing their genes on to the next generation?

I guess being hit by a car travelling at 120km/hr would probably do it.

There was a similar story on Wednesday I think. 'Large group of cyclists arriving in Waterford City' and I looked the clock.... 5pm.

As I always say, as a society we are worse for tolerating stupid people.

It's actually both illegal and lethally dangerous to cycle or walk through that tunnel though. The rush hour aspect just added to the danger due to traffic volumes.

There are big signs with various different things crossed out : bikes, pedestrians, horses, horses and carriages etc etc

That child should be taken off his dad. He is not safe in the current environment.

theres a sign that it is not to be done but I'd like to actually see the by law where its banned.
There is such a law for the limerick tunnel but I'm unsure about the cork tunnel.

A sign errected saying not to do something is not the same as that action being illegal.

What parent would think of a motorway when going for a walk with a buggy

The same rule that says learner drivers must not enter the motorway.

there is a law behind that and is in the road traffic act relating to motorways.
The Jack Lynch tunnel is not a motorway.

theres no other law (that I know of) on the national statute books that relates to specifically banning pedestrians and cyclists and learner drivers etc in the tunnel.
On this lengthy thread theres a lot of talk, but again the conclusion is that it is legally not prohibited to cycle in the Jack Lynch tunnel

if you have time, you can trawl the few dozen laws referenced in the rules of the road to see where cycling etc in a dual carraigeway tunnel is banned

Sorry I misread your post. I thought you were talking about motorways. My mistake so sorry.

On tunnels, I'd take the move that If it says I'm not to enter, I don't enter.
If I'm a pedestrian and the tunnel says no entry, I won't enter. It isnt the safest place for me to go for a wander!
While it mightn't be illegal in the rules of the road, I know that a tunnel without footpaths isn't the safest place in the world to be a pedestrian! Generally with non footpath roads, there's room if the road to walk (grass or rough surface).
I think common sense would apply.

The tunnel in Cork had fairly clear no cyclist signage at either end and as far as I'm aware it's covered by bye-laws.

It wouldn't need motorway designation to implement such a restriction.

If you consider that bye laws are all that exists behind multi axial truck bans, bus lanes etc etc in most cases.

It's not written in legislation that Dawson Street is one way, but that doesn't mean you can drive up it.
