I was told if you purchase a commercial van in the UK and pay the VAT, then VRT the vehicle you are then able to go back to where you purchased the vehicle in the UK and they will have to give you the VAT back.

Id image you would need to supply them with a Irish VAT registration number.

Possibly VAT doesn't apply because it was sold overseas. I think legally they would have to do the transaction in Ireland. Not sure.

Edit: Actually the transaction may be able to be done within the UK once they have proof that you're an Irish company.

Surely you could just give them your IE number and get a zero rated invoice from them?

If you have an Irish Vat No. you don't need to pay the VAT in the first place. If you do have to pay it, you aint getting it back. Uk revenue are a black hole for Irish VAT related claims.

I think your mixing up taxes. VRT is a purely Irish tax for registering a vehicle in Ireland. VAT is paid on most things, but if you buy within the EU you only pay it once. So if you buy VAT free abroad you pay VAT here and vice versa.

The only exemption is if the vehicle is considered new, IIRC it's less than 3 months old or <3000km, then when you go to register it in Ireland you have to pay VAT and VRT on it and reclaim the UK VAT. This is for non VAT registered people/companies.

IIRC, if buying new in the UK, you can state that it's going abroad immediately and therefore won't incur any VAT charges there.
Once it comes in here however, you have to pay the VAT and VRT as above.

    I'm aware of that.

I was trying to see if the OP was getting part of a story, in that if you buy a 2nd hand vehicle which is <6 months old or < 6000km it's considered new for VAT purposes. So if you register it in Ireland you need to pay VRT and VAT, but since you should only pay VAT in one EU country you have to reclaim the UK VAT as a lot of dealers/private sellers won't/can't sell 2nd hand cars VAT free.
