Whats the best rust proofer and metal paint for an old external metal door??
The door has been repaired with some new sheet metal at the bottom

A welder friend of mine who repaired it,mentioned about using this Owatrol Oil as a rust proofing coat....

    http://www.owatrol.com/index.php?langue=en&page=produits-rustol-owatrol

Will this be ok to use over the existing surface rust patches on the old metal and also on the new sheet metal part of the door??

He also mentioned using TriFlow metal paint as a finish coat.

So does this all sound like good advice??

    Thanks.:)

I don't have any expierence with the rust proofer. But if you need to treat rust prior to painting then hammerite " Krust" is the stuff. It neutralises rust. I'd then use something like a red oxide primer and a good overcoat not necessarily tri flow ( very expensive) try something like Johnsons.

I repainted a sheeted steel gate recently. There wasn't too much rust but I gave the steel a thorough wire brushing (cup brush in a drill), wiped down the lot with white spirit to degrease before spot priming with red oxide primer. I let this dry and harden for a couple of days before finish in Dulux Trade undercoat followed by a coat of Dulux Trade Gloss (exterior). I gave the (previously) rusty areas an extra coat of undercoat to make sure the paint film was consistent. I've used Triflow, Hammerite and some of those other "one coat" paint and never found them any better than a 3 coat system (primer, undercoat and gloss). They may dry a little harder than a gloss paint but it's hard to beat the consistency of a 3 coat system you are more sure of getting complete coverage. I've also used Cold Zinc galvanising spray (some of these are overpaintable) where rust was a particular problem.

You will need to get rid of the Rust before you treat it with anything. As suggested use a wire Brush on a drill to burnish out all the rust. Then you can treat with Owtrol before painting with primer. Red Oxide is the most common paint used for a general finish in the Steel industry. after that your into the various treatments but more expensive and hi spec finishes. The problem is some of these specialist paints are as expensive as getting the Door properly Galvanized in somewhere like Galco Steel.
