The wife drives a 00 skoda 1.4 , looks like the head gaskets going ...(losing a little water, creamy gunk on oil filler cap)
The cars probably not worth much,it's in fair condition with about 60 k miles on the clock .... Keep it or scrap it ??

Have ye done other work to the car? Brakes, timing belt etc. if ye have then it might be worth your while to keep it, better the devil you know than you don't, in fairness the car isn't a write off, if the head gasket job is not worth more than the car itself.

Unless ye were planning a change anyway, I would look at holding on to it.

What's a replacement car going to cost? V's getting the head done? If it is only going now, you might not need the head skimmed. You could be looking at €500 for the head to be done, should also get the timing belt, water pump and service done as well. Get some quotes on the head first and see what a replacement costs.

Just rang a neighbour who's a mechanic, said because it's a timing chain it doesn't help...also said the head would have to be skimmed... Didn't give me a ball park figure ....(I did ask)
The car is well maintained, regularly serviced since we have it(3years) ...
I suppose at least I know what I've got....

Are you sure it's a timing chain? AFAIK the 1.4 has a belt and the 1.2 has a chain. Could be wrong here

Timing belt is every 60k in them. To be honest it should have been changed before now due to age.

    60 k euro would be a lot for a skoda :)
60 k miles is just too much for the head gasket ....

    The 8v is chain, 16v is belt. I'd guess it's the 8v.

Scrapping it would be madness because of a failing head gasket. Someone with a bit of DIY knowledge would pay a bit of money for it and fix it, especially with the low mileage. Throw up an accurate ad on donedeal for €500 and I bet it'll be gone within a week. Or scrap it and get €100 if you're lucky.
