Modding RC plane

I'm thinking of getting my first RC plane, and wondering what level of modding would be possible, could I upgrade parts to increase battery life / radio range? any advice would be appreciated.

You WILL crash it. Forget about any hop-ups and just get some hours on the sticks.

Will definitely crash it, get a cheap foamie to practice the basics on initially.
