Just curious as to why people who were awarded a BE in NUI colleges have started using BEng. The degree awarded hasn't changed as far as I can see.

is there a difference between BE and BEng?

Well, I might be wrong but if I see that someone has a BE, I automatically think that they have a level 8 degree, whereas I wouldn't be sure if it was BEng.

    They are the same thing.

OK, so by that rationale, I could call myself BAI if I wished (to me this means Trinity). Not convinced.

Ever since they changed diplomas to degrees, unless it has (hons) after it it treat it as a level 7.

Exactly. So why would someone with a BE use BEng when it would make them look like they've a Level 7 degree?

I don't know anyone who thinks like you, i would have considered a BEng to equal a BE.

Actually I have never heard of a BE before

    Which is it?

If you look at the Accredited Programmes on the Engineers Ireland website, you will see the qualifications awarded by institution. NUI are all BE.

I asked the head of my department this before I graduated and he told me they were the same thing. However, the official title of the course was BE. I did a level 8 so I will always use BE(Hons) to avoid any ambiguity and that is what EI use in any correspondence to me.

In fairness I havent heard of a BE before. But they are the same. In terms of what your presumption is of a BE and BEng, well thats just you.

I would judge someone in an interview if they didn't know (use) the official qualification they were awarded (why would you use anything else? More letters?).

I don't understand how some people here can say they've never heard of a BE while at the same time say it's the same as a BEng.

Anyway, I'll leave it at that.
