Any word on how stations and shows got on in this book yet?

Is there anywhere online I can access the results?

They'll all be making their announcements soon - it's usually embargoed until 5pm.

If you pay for JNLR membership, you can get the full results here: http://info.ipsosmrbi.com/jnlr-login - otherwise, there will be a press releases with limited detail of the results posted here later: http://www.bai.ie/?page_id=142 and here

The figures are just in. No major changes from the last book; 98FM still losing listeners with FM 104 running away with the Dublin market.

There will be good news for Phantom in the next book. Word is that the only radio station with less listeners than them, Spirit, will be included in the next listing :D

    RTÉ 2fm ‏@RTE2fm 15m . @Tubridy2FM stabilises with marginal loss of 1000 to 159,000 b-o-b #JNLR

Yeah, right. Hopefully the new head of 2fm first act is to put this show out of it's misery.

I wonder have Classic hits 4fm gained any listeners in the Dublin region. Niall Boylan will be blowing his trumpet no matter if his show has gained or dropped listeners.

According to their FB page they're fastest growing station in Ireland. Now that's what I call spin

Newstalk Breakfast down to 121,000 Tom Dunne at 55,000, Big problems at Newstalk only Hook doing ok.

How's Ray Foley's show doing compared to the other Dublin breakfast shows? Do online listeners count?

2FM might as well switch off any transmitter infrastructure aimed at Dublin.

    Strawberry Alarm Clock 106,000 listeners.

Right, time for a few facts. :p

So the award for best spin goes to 2FM. Well done there lads. "BOB" I believe is the buzz word from you today. Hector at 128,000 for national radio. Shocking. :pac: Seeya John Mc, don't let the door hit you on the way out (to the office across the carpark). Dan Healy knows what he's at, when it comes to running a business. He'd tell you himself, he's no Head of Programming.

Nova - nice. Some decent gains there. Plenty of complaints in here about their playlist but it seems to be working with Joe Punter. Market share is going to start clipping at 98 soon if the headless chickens in The Malt House continue their nonsense.

Ah 98. Ray Foley currently presiding over possibly the worst figure the 98 brekkie show has ever seen. Can he turn it around? 42,000 listeners - Ryan & Tracy have more. Another PD on the way, the music is all over the gaf, Dermot & Dave are down (to 48,000 if you're interested - hey if they're not tuning in at breakfast, they ain't gonna tune in on the way home). I hope D&D don't fall victim to the knock on effect not winning breakfast is having.

Spin holding their own, market share still an issue though. Can they make kids listen longer? Up to their new PD I guess. Still doing what they say on the tin. Steve K still sounds great, hovering in the 80 thousands, Zoo Crew boys working well together too.

FM104 - still No.1 and the only music station to actually increase market share in this book. Its success baffles some and entertains some more but whatever they're doing, it's working. Strawberry at 106,000 listeners according to their social media this afternoon. Piss poor according to some on Boards though. UTV must be happy?

Q102 - they'll maybe feel a little sore in this book considering they made some changes at the end of 2012. Good solid line up in Dave Harrington and Aidan Cooney, still No.2 in Dublin though and probably giving 98 a right pain in their arse. Breakfast is down albeit slightly.

4FM - some gains for sure. Their music policy is radically different to when it launched but the audience seem to like it as there's growth. Galway and Cork particularly seem to be enjoying Gareth's made up heartbreakers every afternoon. I'd watch the blatant ad for 'x' company out of the 3pm news on the firm favourites feature, Enda Murphy was only short of giving out a company phone number the other day. Niall Boylan up across Ireland, fake callers, real callers, who cares - it's something the counties outside Dublin are possibly somewhat new to!

Phantom, Sunshine - still ticking over, still proving it's a dog eat dog business.

    Over and out!

Spin and today fm seem to be the only Communicorp stations that are run properly. 98fm seems to be in a death spiral, Newstalk is going backwards.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 451 ✭✭armchair fusilier

    • 'Off the Ball' has 43,000 listeners, an increase of 4,000
    • 'Tom Dunne' has 55,000 listeners, an increase of 2,000
    • 'Newstalk Breakfast' remains unchanged at 121,000
    • Weekend Sports Saturday & Sunday have a combined audience of 141,000, - a 15,000 increase
    • 'Hook’s Saturday Sit-in' has 57,000 listeners - an increase of 12,000
    • An increase in audience of 6,000, book-on-book, in the rest of Leinster

Has someone in Newstalk really just added the Saturday Sports Show figures to the Sunday Sports show figures and presented it as if it was some kind of relevant stat? A lot of the same people would listen to both shows, so you would be counting them twice. It gives a nice big, but completely misleading, result.

It goes without saying, that Radio Stations who have had a good book deserve to be applauded. However, considering there are many stations now in the important stages looking to renew their licence for another 10years, should Radio Stations that have not done well and are not producing good books be mentioned here also?

    Work away...

FM104 is the clear success story. Nova were happy with their market share gain, and 4fm were very happy with their gains.

And yes, no matter how you hear a station, even if you pick it up through a dodgy Bulgarian dentist's filling, it still counts for the JNLR.

Being a normal human being I have no idea how to interpret this data - how are Phantom doing, relative to the last few?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28 Radioman44

I'm not sure I can understand your reply. You answered referring to the stations that are doing very well. The recent JNLR's show this. My point was simply asking, should we review the Radio Stations that have not produced satisfactory results for the franchise they have a licence for? There are many Radio Hams and experts that could if they wished, express their opinion.

Actually King of Fairview, Im glad I was not alone in trying to understand the reply to my comment. The reference to Dentistry and Another Country had me baffled. This is my first post on Boards, but have been reading the blogs for over a year now...

Only the first sentence was in reply to your post. It was an invitation for you to post the information you like.

But, I gather now you are looking for it rather than offering it.

A more generous soul might provide the particular info you require, but it would be time consuming to reply comprehensively.

The more interesting question is who did badly -RTE stable tops the list. 98fm obviously but what about John Purcells own KCLR ( was Dan Healy a shareholder at some stage) . There are others too

First off, good work as always TrueBlue, the graphs are excellent and informative.

Here is a brief summary of my views on this weeks JNLR results. As always, feel free to ask for any further detail. As always too, I am looking more at trends rather than book on book figures.

FM104 continue to utterly dominate the Dublin music market. They now have more than twice the market share of former number 1 98FM. A cursory glance at a graph of the last three years of JNLR figures shows the varying fortunes of 98 and 104 very clearly. Some trends take a while to appear and are trickier to analyse but some are pretty easy to graph.

I know I talk a lot about consistency in these posts but it really is peculiar that there seems to be no concept of the value of consistency at all in the Malt House or Marconi House (Spin being the only exception). The endless changing of music policy, marketing strategy and Programme Directors can only lead to the current chaos in 98 and now Michael Brett has been handed what can only be described as a poisoned chalice. The departure of almost all of Communicorps senior management in the last 18 months is a major factor in all this but not the only reason.

Good book to for Nova who have managed to arrest the slow drops of the last couple of books and boost their share by a significant 0.8% in this book but more importantly have returned to an upward trajectory and very respectable numbers this time around. The ongoing advertising spend there is paying dividends. Small increase too for 4FM which has at least gained some traction in the Dublin market although 1.6% share is still exceptionally low for such a broad format station. The trends and the numbers show that 4FM will live or die by the sales it can make in Limerick and Cork rather than in Dublin.

Average book for Q102 and Spin too with a pretty stable trend curve for both stations over the last year or so. Interesting to see if any changes are made by Spins new PD but if I had one piece of advice it would be to leave well enough alone. More small decreases for RTE 2FM, continuing the steady decline of recent years. The arrival of Dan Healy (another ad man/woman helming a radio station or entire group interestingly) will take a while to show results positive or negative.

In Marconi House there will be some concern at drops at breakfast in both Today FM and Newstalk but in fairness both continue to perform well. The departure of one of the final members of managers from the Willie O Reilly era (Caroline Davies) does not I fear bode well for Today FM who I worry may end up in similar turmoil to 98. Time will tell.

Sunshine 106.8 are also on a worrying slide over the past couple of years having had a very respectable share over 3% not so long ago. They have managed to lose 30% of their audience recently without seemingly doing much. Perhaps that is where the problem is and new PD Carol Dooley will have to work hard to add some relevance and audience there. Some recovery for Phantoms reach in this book but the figures are still desperately poor. Some minor increase at breakfast but drops in the other dayparts before another minor rally in the late evening. The weekend trends look even worse with reach on Saturdays now below 10,000 and Sundays just above that. Some of the decisions taken, or not taken at Phantom are now coming home to roost and are delivering yet more audience hammer blows.

Finally, the 15-24 year olds in Dublin are listening even less now than ever before. An opportunity being wasted every day by some and an opportunity to be expolited by others.

Good analysis as usual but is Carol dooley not the PD of Eastcoast having left Sunshine?

Looking at the graphs and stats provided 98 have been on a steady decline since Dermot and Dave left breakfast in 2010. They had a much larger market share and have dropped that since the guys moved to the afternoon, cant blame Foley for that because not a lot of what he has done is represented in this book. Kind of shows how important the breakfast market is to retaining the audience for the day. 98 and 104 have basically the same show from 10-3 but the figures are in favor of 104. Does anyone have the figures for Andy Preston's show by the way, I know they are better than 98FM, but I heard Andy say something like 138,000 thousand on Friday?
