Friend starting cycling on cx bike so has option for wider tyre.

He is new to cycling, so keeping comfort in mind, would 28mm be best bet?

All suggestions welcome. Bike I believe will be used typicaaly on rural county/byroads etc

I'd say 25's would be grand, keep the pressure to about 100-110 psi and he's be laughing.

I'm not heavy and I train on 28's. I think they are great for Irish roads.

Might try a pair, what tyre do you use?
Do you find it much slower if at all?

I use continental contacts. They are more of a commuting/touring tyre. As I carry a small load every day. Do I feel slower? hmm. I had one of them on the rear wheel in my last race because I was too lazy to swap in my racing wheel. I got dropped, but that's cos the race was too hilly for me!

I've been out for spins with other people of similar ability who were on narrower tyres and kept up with them and [awesomeness]I pass almost everyone on my commute [/awesomeness]!

I've been trying to un-race myself lately when it comes to cycling outside of actual racing so maybe my advice is not the best to take. I like not puncturing and comfort more than I like speed.

Started on 25s at 17 stone zero problems. Now going sub 16 and already thinking about 23s. The extra weight actually gives a smoother ride if you remember to keep em at 120psi, which I do before every ride.
