    Hi guys,

I got a quote off a mechanic for €200 for replacing the expansion tank in a e46 318i. Is this very expensive? I looked on ebay and you can buy an expansion tank for €50.

This is a pretty handy DIY if you know how to bleed your cooling system.
He is probably buying the part straight from BMW so that would inflate the price.

I would say that is a reasonable quote. 50 for the part, plus the cost of BMW spec coolant. I can't remember but that could be anywhere from 25 up. The job would take a DIYer at least a couple of hours depending on your experience and has a couple of tricky bits. And of course the bleeding of the system can cause some headaches, but there are plenty guides online.

I wouldn't think its a bad price. Certainly not ridiculous.

Hes not going to be buying from ebay you should price an expansion tank and coolant from a dealer then factor in fitting bleeding and pressure testing the cooling system.

As well as the unit itself account for coolant, jubilee clips etc and it's not overly expensive

If your doing yourself, undo the screws to let out the coolant, then you just unclip the pipes I think 3/4 of them from the tank. Unscrew it from the brack with a torx screw. I think a T20-25. Its free to take out then, this the hard part, taking off the bottom. Some guy used a car jack and pushed the tank off the plate from the bottom. Then just put the old plate back on to the new tank.

I just gave this guy a ring and he's calling out to me Monday, its lot less hassle than driving to a mechanic and risking doing more damage when the car overheats. He said it would be around €160 if its the expansion tank.

Thanks for all the advice lads.
