Since this morning my desktop (running OSX 10.5) won't let me log on.
It refuses the password for the admin as well as the user account set up on it.
I've checked if I had caps lock on, switched keyboard, rebooted but no luck.
I'm pretty well lost for how to overcome this and welcome any suggestions...

You need either the install media and it's a menu option if you boot from that, or boot into Single User Mode. Google the specifics.

This will help reset your password - as long as you still have the OSX Disc:

    - Start from your Mac OS X 10.5 Install DVD. (You do not need to install Leopard again.)

    - From the Utilities menu, choose Reset Password (do not choose Firmware Password Utility).

    - Follow the onscreen instructions to reset the admin password
-- In more detail: Select the name of the drive that Mac OS X is installed on, select the user account (i.e John Smith) from drop down menu, type the password in the first field, re-enter the password in the second field, then click the Save button.

    Reboot... sorted!
