Gas & Boiler

    Hi all,

    Just a few questions.

Any idea of the average kWh for a three bed semi-d for the year please?

Also, is it more energy efficient to leave on a gas boiler for longer rather than on and off eg

    Mornings: Upstairs 1hr, Down 1hr
    Afternoon: Down 1/2 hr
Evenings: Down 2 hr, Up 1 hr
Water: Morn 1hr, Afternoon 1/2h, Even 1/2 hr.

ie does it take more energy to light the boiler each time from scratch or should we just put it on for a few hours and let the insulation keep it in.

    Hope that makes sense.

    Thanks

That's a great question but very difficult to answer as it would depend on a few factors. I know you said average but it would be more down to heat loss of the house. All heating systems are only trying to match the heat loss rate of the home. So if you calculate the heat loss through each room, added together with dhw demand, system losses & boiler efficiency losses, you would then arrive at a reasonably accurate figure.

Again, it sometimes can be it the house has very little heat loss & the boiler can modulate to suit the heating system return temperature.
If high losses & a standard efficiency boiler it would probably be more cost effective to only heat when required.

Sounds easier to say than do! I understand its a difficult question to answer.

Our insulation is quite good generally except for our windows - so maybe we'll try to heat for same amount of time (maybe a little longer) but continuously.

    Thanks for the reply.

It is really not that difficult. There are complex equations, or use a Mears calculator or a simplified version as follows:
    Poor Insulation 100w per sqft
    Average Insulation 75w per sqft
    Good Insulation 50w per sqft
    Excellent Insulation 30w per sqft

What you think is good is probably not as good as you think. I mean that with the best of intentions but modern air tight homes put us to shame nowadays.
I am a heating person but if everybody turned their attention to insulation I would be out of business!
There is nothing like a trial. Try both for a week taking note of the meter readings, comfort levels & the outside temperature/conditions.
