can't upgrade my Ariva 150 combo by USB

    Hi,

I had an Ariva 150 combo installed in a (very) elderly neighbours house recently. He gets a lot of home help/nurses etc in and something happened and he lost all his channels.

My wife rang satellite.ie (the installers) for help and they emailed me instruction on how to download a file, and then upgrade the system by USB.

I have tried everything, including using the USB slot on the back, but the option to upgrade by USB is always greyed out.

At the moment all he has are the Irish channels.

I don't want to tell him he has to pay for a call out charge.

I would really appreciate help. I am technically minded but I have no experience with things digital TV so go easy on me....

All I want is a combined list of Irish and Satellite channels, that I can then apply the 'Skip' to so anyone in the house only has to cycle through 20-30 channels to find something for him. He is very old and has problem using the remote.

    Thanks

    Well you're doing something wrong.

Format the USB, drop the single ABS file on it, then insert into the Ariva and it should work.

I deleted everything on it and had only the one file.

There is no message on screen when I insert it, but when I unplug it it pops up a little message that it has been removed.

Have you tried another USB stick?

No. The stick works for me fine elsewhere.

Now the only thing I can think of is that I copied the file across on the Mac.
I could bootcamp up to Windows7 and try that.... not sure if that is even worth trying...

But is your USB key for sure formatted in FAT32 or NTFS, rather than MAC's HFS? That would explain why the Ariva detects the USB key but can't see anything on it.

OK so I'm in Windows7 now and it won't recognise the stick!

Anyway, I'm rooting around and it seems it is not assigned a drive letter to it.
I am in the Computer Management console and I can see it, but it will not let me assign a drive letter to it.

But it is listed as FAT32 and Healthy.

Oh well... I will root around for another USB stick I suppose....

If all else fails then take it back to your place, use a network cable to connect it to your broadband and update off the interweb.
