Process of learning how to drive

    This wasn't explained or answered in the FAQ nor in the theory book but how does one get a full license.
    My understanding is that you have to get a theory test, apply for a learner's permit. Once you get the learner's permit, I have to take 12 lessons from an ADI. After the 12 lessons, I can do the driving test if the ADI recommends it. Once I've done the driving test and passed it, is that it. After that I would have a full driving license. Correct?
    I am a little unsure as I thought there was a minimum period of when you can take the driving test as in you need to have 6 months of experience under your belt before you can take it. Is this correct?

    Sorry for all of the questions, nobody in my family appears to know the process so I just wanted to know what it is.

    Thanks,
    Jamie

    Theory test (if passed will give you cert)
    ->
    Learner permit (produce theory test cert when applying for this)
    ->
    12 EDT lessons & 6months time passed from issue of first learner permit
    ->
    Driving test (You can take this whenever you want, you don't need your ADI's say to take it, though they will probably know if you're ready. Upon passing you will be given a certificate of competency. )
    ->
    Full license (Hand in cert of competence when applying for this.)

    Thank you! Just what I was looking for. Another question, do I have to have a 6 month period lapsed before I can take the driving test or can I take it whenever I feel ready to do so before 6 months?

    6 months must pass since the issue of your 1st permit. So if when you get your green license it has an issue date of the 1-1-13, you wouldn't be able to sit a test untill after 1-7-13.

    Having said that, it doesn't mean you need to be driving 6 months. I took my test 5 months after I started driving, because I had my license a month before I had insurance. So if you have no license as you don't intend to start driving yet, you could always apply for the license now and kind of... bypass that waiting period if it was so important to you. The 6month period is a fairly good timeframe to learn in though.
