New lens advice

    Hi,
i own, or i shoud say used to own canon 17-85mm IS USM lens.Which unfortunatelly got dropped into the ocean while i was on my hollidays.I dont think its actually worth repairing as after drying out and inspecting it the focus ring gets stuck every half a turn and the glass elements inside...well lets say they have seen better days...
i really loved it and paired with my 10-22mm UWA and 50mm f1.8 prime i had everything that i needed for almost any situation.
I own 500D body and woundering is there any alternatives to it thats worth spending a couple of bucks extra regarding IQ?As when i got my 10-22mm and done some amateur testing i noticed that at 17mm the UWA was sharper.
Now i will be looking only at second hand market (unfortunatelly i cant afford a brand new lens) and the 17-85 seems to be going for around 200e which is not too bad i think? What would you suggest?I know that recently Sigma, Tamron etc. up'ed their game and they are making lenses just as good as Canon L's or am i wrong?tho i would suspect it would be a total waste of money to put an L lense on my body.
Some advice would be much appreciated and thanks in advance for your patience reading.

You could consider a sigma 18-50mm 2.8. I got to like the wider aperture.

    Hi,
Thanks for your reply.i was looking at that and this one
    17-50mm F2.8 EX DC HSM
i have tried the standart kit lens and from using both of them, ended really liking the 17mm end.even tho its only 1mm but it seems like it makes all the difference, well at least for me.
Its just reading some reviews on the net there seems to be quite a bit of talk about "bad copies".is it really like winning like lottery?going for second hand market doesnt add ay confidence at all about bying one of them...or is it just me beeing paranoid? That was actually one of the reasons i went for canon UWA rather then Sigma 10-20mm.

that's always a risk with getting 2nd hand alright, i've been very lucky so far (touch wood!:)) and i do examine them thoroughly before buying too.
i got a 17-70mm 2.8-4.5 and the extra 1mm was good alright, but switched to the 18-50mm 2.8 to get the constant aperture through out. and got the sigma 10-20, and a fish-eye 8.5mm to compensate :)
