My mother bought an '07 407 last May, they gave 6mths warranty on the car. It turns out that the clutch is gone now and the main dealer have said its €1200 to replace (clutch and flywheel (replace dual mass with solid mass)). she has only put 3k kilometres on it since buying :(.
Anyway spoke to a my mate who is good mates with the sales manager in the garage, to see if he could get any better price.
The garage have come back and said they will do it for €600 as a goodwill gesture.
Is this a good price or were they just fleecing my in the 1st place when quoting the original price ?
    Any help much appreciated.

€600 is cheap for the job, but cost of parts is well covered, €12-1300 for main dealer clutch and dmf is the going rate (still expensive, but that's what they charge:))

Thanks guys. I called a main dealer in Kilkenny just for interest.
They quoted me €900 all in fitted (flywheel, release bearing, clutch , etc)
He said thats a very good price and some dealers would charge €900 just for parts alone .
You just wonder what some of these main dealers can try and get away with.
But I think ill get it done in the main dealer for the €600 as opposed to try and get a spurious part in motor factors and mechanic to do as a nixer.

Why do they want to replace dualmass flywheel with single-mass one?

Surely at the prices you are talking about, you should get a proper dual-mass flywheel.

There's something very iffy about main dealers and the prices they quote for parts.

two weekends ago I sent an email to the Volkswagen garage here in Belfast looking for a wheel bolt key replacment. I gave the parts manager the Number plate and the VIN number aswell as a picture of the bolt shape itself. He replied and told me it would be £37.50.

I didn't reply as I thought that was bollox and quite expensive, I then went into the very same vw garage when a different guy was working, and was told that they would have to get it specially ordered in - the total price: £20.

this also happened with getting a key replacment aswell - emailing quote was like £230, and when I went in I was told £160.

surley a quote is a quote and it's not that difficult to define. In the OP's case - a standard price for the parts as they all come from the same main supplier, and i'm sure there is a standard time allocation for certain jobs. I don't understand how quotes can vary so much from €1200 in one place, and €900 in another place.

What were the symptoms of the clutch/flywheel when it failed..?
If its the 1.6hdi then it could be just the release bearing that has failed...

I have seem dmf's lasting up to 150+k mls on these engines but release bearing failing @110k mls.
What mileage is on this 407...?

If the dmf/clutch has failed and your getting it replaced for €600 then this is a very good price as the price of a sachs/valeo dmf+clutch kit works out
    around €450-500.

Its revving up to 4-5k revs when you put foot on accelerator after engaging the gear. It seems when you have engine running and take foot off clutch in-gear it does not stall.
There are 80k miles on the car.
The garage said its the dmf/clutch which is failing, the garage also said in the original quote they suggest replacing dmf with solid flywheel (cost factor), he did say single flywheel have stiffer clutch and a little more engine noise.

I've had a solid flywheel fitted before to an Octavia and found it fine, but it's not a great match to some cars. Maybe try the pug owners forums to see if it is acceptable before getting work done either way?

That 407 could have either Valeo SMF or Sachs DMF in it. It's a pain telling someone that they will need to replace both flywheel ad clutch due to a stupid design.
