painting stairs

    hi i have a mahogany stained staircase, that i want to paint or restain, has anybody done this and how did it turn out, tried a darker stain-varnish on a small bit of the stairs, but it didn't take too well was thinking of painting the risers white and the steps brown, any advice appreciated. thanks

    Was recently in woodies and they advised using "universal paint" (by rust-oleum IIRC) I was told no need for sanding or primer with this paint. Was gonna use it to paint over varnished stairs (bannisters). Haven't gotten around to trying it yet... That type of paint is quite expensive btw.

    I have done exactly that - the painted risers is a nice effect - I'd honestly say threads would be destroyed if painted. I used yacht varnish on 1930s teak(?) threads.

    Had to sand the hell out of them as sides had been painted many moons before (to frame a runner). Slightly different tone in centre due to age.

    Recently moved so got an mdf/deal staircase clad and also painted risers an off white, will try to post pics.

    thanks. not sure what kind of wood stain i used on the steps, so was thiking of painting them brown and then a coat of varnish on top
