if no one here can help, maybe have a read of the reviews on tripadvisor, the palacio is the number 1 place according to them

Thanks Jocelynl - was looking at that alright but it's huge money at €180+ per night, if we had the cash it would be ideal :) Unfortunately it doesn't seem like a lot of people on this forum have visited Estoril so it's very hard to find any up to date information.

that's way too expensive alright and for june, maybe expect that for july/august...sure you only want to spend 100-120 max per night

hope you get somewhere nice :) would you got self catering...you could try bookings.com, housetrip or holidays lettings websites

Sounds like a good alternative alright, we might look into self catering if we can't find a nice hotel. Thanks for the info.

We stayed here in Cascais, which is very close to Estoril - you can walk between the resorts along the beach.

Now, we really liked it and it's in a great location in the old part of the town but it might not be to everybody's taste. It's in a very old building and some rooms are better than others (look to tripadvisor for advice). On the upside, the Staff were lovely, parts of the building like the dining room and the old chapel are amazing, and you really felt like you were staying in a part of old Portugal. Like I say, not for everyone but we really liked it.

Cascais is a good location to base yourself in. It's on a direct train line to Lisbon and Belem (which is very safe and runs till 2am) and there are buses to Sintra. There are great restaurants and the beach is lovely - especially if you walk towards Estoril.

Cheers for that Unshelved! We're looking for a hotel with a pool so that might not suit :) Would it be better to stay in Estoril or Cascais, seems to me that Cascais is a little more lively? Or maybe it doesn't make that much of a difference as they are within walking distance of each other.

I've stayed in both Estoril and Cascais. Estoril can be very quiet. Cascais is way more lively (still not hopping though). Both are connected by a promenade and a regular local train.

In Estoril I've stayed here twice which was fine and depending on the time of year can be cheap.

In Cascais I've stayed here - very nice and very swanky but pricey. However there are a few new hotels nearby that might have deals.

Personally, I'd go to Cascais. Both are just 30/40 mins from Lisbon by train.

Maybe rent an apartment in Lisbon and use it as a base?. Its like staying in Dublin and getting the dart to Sandycove. Lisbon is a great city and Estoril/Cascais are lovely also. Stop off in Belem for their lovely pastries and do try to visit Sintra, its really gorgeous.

@ atgate, brilliant info thanks, I'll check them both out.

@ Patrick2010, we're looking for a quiet sun holiday. We'll be using Estoril/Cascais as a base and may vist some of the places you mentioned thanks.
