New set up

I've been happy without terrestrial TV since the analogue went off in October, but think it's time to get the telly back again.

I am in a rented house, there is no satellite dish. The coaxial plug is still there so I'd like to find out what I need to do to get the terrestrial stations back on.

Do I only need a receiver, or do I have to get a dish put up?

I would prefer to get the UK channels where possible, but it would really depend on price difference, if any, when setting up.

    Any help/advice appreciated.

For UK channels, in most parts of Ireland, you'll need a dish or a cable tv subscription.

What part of the country are you in?

I am in Dublin. So when you say most parts, does that mean there's parts I can simply grab a set top box and plug & play?

I don't think there's even an aerial, but I'll need to double-check that. Back when we had analogue we barely got the Irish stations, they were very poor quality, so I'm assuming there's no aerial.

Dublin wouldn't be one of the areas for reception of UK terrestrial signals.

The Saorview signal from the Three Rock transmitter is much stronger than analogue was & you might get satisfactory reception with an indoor 'set-top' aerial or maybe something in the attic.

I receive all of the stations ninety five percent of the time interference free from Divis Peter here in between Balbriggan. :)

What part of Dublin may we ask? Freeview from Divis outside Belfast may be possible where you are.

I'm not going to recommend UK terrestrial reception to anyone, even in areas where it would be possible to get a signal of some kind, & probably at greater expense than a basic satellite setup, unless it's as least as reliable as said basic satellite setup.

Saorview switchover info here - http://www.saorview.ie/what-is-saorview/make-the-switch/

Combi Saorview and satellite receivers are available if the owner will allow you to install a sat dish - http://www.saorview.ie/saorview-combi/. I posted this earlier - http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=84296402&postcount=8
