Ok my new giant defy 1 is ready for collection and I need to decide what pedals and shoes to get. At present I have a hybrid with clips and runners. It's my first road bike and I know nothing about them.

I will be using the bike for mostly training and leisure but might use it for commuting also. I'm currently using the hybrid for going to work. I have to park the bike well away from the office so I would need to bring spare shoes if I go for SPD-SL shoes. Would I be mad to get MTB pedals on a road bike?

Unless you plan to race, MTB pedals are the way to go. Much more versatile. And you don't look as much of a mentallist walking to the shower in work.

Or you could always just commute on flat pedals with runners on, I hate those old style clips, they are an absolute pain in the hole. With all the bolloxing about getting your feet in and out of the straps, you'd be quicker commuting on flat pedals.

I looked at the reviews of those Specialized BG expert shoes, people saying how great they are and good value for £70, looked at cycleways website (Dublin lbs) and they're selling them for €200!
