Changing name on vehicle registration

Hi, hoping somebody can help here, not really sure how this stuff works and none the wiser after reading cit info page.

I recently bought a car (my first) of a family member. The family member then registered the car in my name. However, he misspelled my first name and used my husbands name as my surname instead of my own name (I did not take my husbands name when I married).

How do I change the name on the vehicle reg? (I would rather the family member didn't know, I don't want them to feel bad!)

You just fill out the log book with your new details, just your name in this case, and there is a box you can tick I think which says change of name or something.

Pop it in an envelope and send it off to the Department of Transport, Shannon, Co. Clare.

If you complete the change of name section will you not be adding another owner to the vehicle history - may not be an issue with you but might be for the next buyer.

Why not ring Shannon and ask them

There are separate boxes you can tick, one is for change of ownership, where the old and new owners both sign the log book - this is where a new owner is added to the vehicle history.

Another box can be ticked for change of owner details, like address or name etc which happens a lot. I'm 99.9% sure this doesn't add an owner to vehicle history

I think you can change the address withhout adding an owner, but a change of name (from filling in the back of the VLC) will add another owner.

I'd ring Shannon (unless you aren't bothered about adding another owner - that's the quickest and easiest thing to do). There is probably a way around getting the name amended to the correct details in this case.

You could be right but I think there is an option to change surname without adding an owner by filling out the details on the book.

But ya to be sure just ring Shannon, if you find out OP let us know!

Ok, I'll ring today, thanks:)

- Although its a 12 year old Punto...not sure it matters if I add another owner at this stage, it might be only fit for scrap when I've finished with it!
