Gaming PC advice

    Hi all

I'm contemplating building a gaming pc from scratch to use solely with my 50" tv. I've built a PC before from scratch that worked and loved doing it so would be confident doing it again. However, I'd like the PC to be permanently connected to the TV and be stored underneath the TV like a sky box or an Xbox etc. I'd like it to replace my xbox 360 but I'd like to use my xbox controller for all the games I play (Fifa 2013 and black ops 2, tomb raider at the minute, Gta 5 when it comes out.)

Is what I want possible/recommended? What advice do you have for me? My tv is a LGPK550

    Cheers

I'll get the ball rolling anyway. Something like this would do the trick. I didn't add a HDD as the 500gb ssd should be plenty for windows, programs and games. You can add one if you want more storage space. I don't see the need unless you wanted to back up your blu ray collection.

There's decent overclocking potential here too although if you want to keep this quiet you won't want to push it too high. It's a damn shame this case doesn't have the option to install a 120 or 140m closed loop water cooler. It is possible to install a h80i with some modification.

I included a good 5.1 speaker set. Perfect for movies and games and a good sound card that will really make the most of them.

I wouldn't use the 605. It's been shown in a few reviews to be not the most efficient at air or water cooling. My vote goes for the Nanoxia Deep Silence 1, for two reasons:

    1) Looks very similar to the R4, performs the same if not better, and has the following, which the R4 does not:
    2) Water cooling expansion. Possibly not very likely, but it does at least allow a H100, or H220, with options to add a second 240 as well.
    3) HDD options. Nanoxia gives you the option of buying more HDD cages, which Fractal doesn't, so you could mount up to 15 hard drives in this case. This opens up NAS options down the line.

Sadly there are very few horizontal desktop style cases that fit the bill. The lack of a pre installed exhaust fan and the lack of options for good coolers are the main reasons of poor thermals in some tests. With the included cpu cooler and exhaust fan it should not be an issue at all.

The Nanoxia could be used sideways I guess. If you don't mind the awkward door and the sheer size of it. The deep silence 2 is smaller and probably more suited to the job. It's still way bigger than the fractal though.

I don't understand why nobody has come out with a good horizontal design yet. The 605 is close but they really messed up by not allowing any provision for radiator placements. Even the smaller 304 can take a single 140 rad. I did consider the 304 with a nzxt x40 but you would not be able to use the sound card with it or the blu ray drive.

The 605 would have been perfect if they went with a matx design instead of full atx and used the space for a 240 rad on the side. If you are willing to drill 2 holes in the side you can externally mount a 120 rad and run the tubes through the holes.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Glad that what I'm looking for isn't all that bizarre. I haven't seen too many people (none in fact) with a gaming PC directly hooked up to the TV on a permanent basis but it looks like fun and I think I'd appreciate the better graphics.

Is there anything else I need to look out for? Anyone think it's a crazy idea? Would I be better off with a next gen console? (playing devils advocate!)

I have mine on tv and it's the nuts.

A next gen console of course would be a lot cheaper than this but with the pc you already have a massive catalogue of games. The graphics will still be better on pc and it's just more flexible. Games are cheaper and easier to get. Gotta love steam sales and there are lots of top quality free and dirt cheap games + free mods and often free content that would be a dlc on console.

Let's not forget the fact that you can throw a 3TB drive in your computer and have all of your media stored on it. You'll also have far superior sound as well.

Thanks lads, the plan would be to use a 360 controller for all gaming basically. And is http://www.hardwareversand.de/ the best place to buy?

One last thing, how long should the above pc last for playing newest games etc? Is it futureproof in the sense that it can be easily upgraded?

Using the xbox controller is fine for the majority of games and has good support in a lot of games.

HWVS will be the cheapest and they are pretty reliable.

The pc should last a good while before needing an upgrade. There won't be many upgrade options for the processor but you will get a good 5 years out of that for gaming. The graphics card should handle games at or near top settings for at least 2-3 years. You can upgrade whenever you want if it starts to struggle.

Throw 2 of these fans in as well.
