In Windows 8.1 due in June. Also boot straight to desktop will be back as an option.

Why they didn't have this as an option when Windows 8 launched is anybody's guess...

    Exposure to the tile UI.

I don't see the difference, all it does is launch the tile screen anyway and there's a button on your keyboard for that.

This is just a rumor but, even if it is true so what. With Start8 I can already boot straight into the desktop and have my classic start button back.

I'm not that surprised to hear this. I've spent a good bit of time using the Metro environment in an effort to get used to it, and I just find it annoying. There's nothing wrong with a basic desktop layout with the classic Start menu, it just works. The Metro thing is a nice idea for tablets but for desktops, its just clunky and annoying. I'm surprised they didnt incorporate such an idea ( to choose Metro or classic) in the original release.

Like uncle_sam_ie, I've settled on Start8 last year and it's working great. Not a bad piece of software for €3 :D

Nice. I just use Classic Shell. Works perfectly for me. No fee required either :)

I tried them all, including classic shell. Gave me some shell extension issues on some PCs. Also not as customisable as Start8. As you say it is free though :)

I downloaded Windows 8.1 onto my laptop & it was working fine. Then I got a messege saying I had no anti -virus installed
I googled the issue & 8.1 is not compatible with Norton
I talked online to a Norton Tech - he said to install Norton Beta
I did this & the whole system crashed (thankfully Toshiba auto re-installed itself, but all my programs were missing. Documents, Pictures & Music were fine)
I eventually found all the programs in a folder "Windows.old"
The ones I couldn't copy into the new C drive (iTunes etc) I had to re-install from the websites I originally got them from
Eventually I was able to delete windows.old & get lots of space back
