    Hi all,

I am trying to transition from a current career in electrical design engineering to a Facilities management position with little success. I have 9 years experience as an electrical technician and two years in an electrical design consultancy however most Facilities management positions require 7 or 8 years in a similar role and employers seem not to entertain anything less.

I have contacted people in this area on Linkeln to no avail and would like some direction as to what direction to go in, ie (Do a course, get weekend experience).

Any constructive suggestions would be welcome.

    Thank you.

    Can I ask why FM?

Seems that you have a very good electrical background, should you not try capitalise on that. The FM business is tough and there is massive competition out there, so costs are being squeezed (rates and salaries) to deliver cost saving to the customer.

Worked for an FM provider for 2 years and while I can honestly say it was a fantastic challenge and the job satisfying, I was wrecked all the time from the non stop activity and travel.

    Where are you based?

    Hi Nukem,

While im happy to have a job and not complaining in that respect, im sick of the politics involved in the business im in, with contractors, architects & customers trying to screw you over and point the finger at the designer whenever something goes wrong.

While I realise everyone is trying to save a few quid and the finger can be pointed at you in every sector I thought FM might be a little better and also with more financial rewards.

Im in the Dublin area and if possible I would like to get a taste of what FM would be like by assisting a manager at the weekends.
