Missed sign on day

So I was meant to sign on last wednesday but missed it due to been sick. I went into social welfare today to explain that I had missed my signing on day due to been sick. To say that I got less than than a welcomed response would be a understatement.
He asked why I didn't come in Thursday and Friday to which I told him the truth that I was pretty much stuck to the toilet for the last few days(sorry if too much detail). He wasn't one bit sympathetic to my situation. I got a bombardment of questions like why I didn't go to doctor. For one I don't go to the doctor unless I really have to and two I don't have a medical card(yes I know I should apply for one) so couldn't afford to be paying 50 odd euro when all I get a week is 188 and my rent alone is 85euro of that.

Thing is now he is refusing me job seeker's benefit unless I go to the doctor and get a letter to say i'm fit to work. Is this right? He also has made my fill up a form stating what efforts I have been making to get a job, I don't really mind this but having to go to a doctor is costing me money.

Anyone got any advice for me on how I should handle this?

You were not actively seeking work last week.
Look at it from the official's point of view.

The term, "actively seeking work" does this mean walking round the streets looking for work, most people would use the FAS site on the internet and other job sites to look for jobs, you could still be at home sick looking for work.

You were sick, the dept requires proof that you are fit (not sick) before your JSB claim can continue.

So in other words i've no choice but to fork out for a doctors assessment to say i'm well enough to work

If "I was sick" was an acceptable excuse for not making your sign on date, there would be hundreds of people just sauntering in and signing on whenever they want, and others who'd just stop signing on completely. Even with it not being tolerated I'm sure it's still something they hear all the time.

Whether you're signing on, or going to work, or attending college, if you fail to show up for something it's often expected that you'll provide a med cert. Sympathy doesn't really come into it.
