    Hey all.

Girlfriend's dad is in his early 70's, though very limber for his age.

At the moment, he has a 2010 Mercedes E220 for comfort and a Suzuki SX4 for winter in the country.

He wants to trade in the Mercedes, and get something with 4x4 capabilities. He likes comfort and reliability, and enjoys the height of the SX4.

    What would you guys suggest?

I know this is a big one, but I don't know - didn't feel comfortable asking him.

But, TBH I don't think budget is a huge factor (within reason) as he bought a brand new E-Class 3 years ago.

    Volvo xc60?

the logical answer would be the mercedes ML, although the discovery 4 is quite nice and has all the offroad capabilities you could want.

toyota dealers seem to be afraid of options , Quite nice but good luck getting one here.

Disco 5 Seat Commercial. €52,925 ex. Works and a proper 4x4 with all the bells and whistles one would expect from a luxury 4x4. Taxed privately on engine size is the only problem - €1,494 per year at the moment.

You'd be looking at a higher price for a similar spec XC60, with less power but cheaper tax.

Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda Yeti are both nice small 4x4's that may fit the bill.

Audi Q5 perhaps? Had one for a while and it was very nice.

Not too big and unwieldy but still gives a slightly higher driving position. It was very comfortable on long runs.

    Audi Q7, smooth and reliable

I've had 2 Jeep Grand Cherokees, them moved to the Q7 in 2006 when it came out

I've had it now for almost 7 years, have taken it to France 4 times, there isnt anything on the market that would tempt me to trade it

There is a new lower HP model out with road tax in the 700 region

I don't think that would get too far up a muddy field or last too long on some of the country roads around Ireland with a GL, personally I would go down the landcruiser route

New you're looking at nearly 80k but you would pick a 2010 up for around 50k from a dealer, I presume he would be looking at something post 08 so motor tax would be a killer

I'm sure a Gl would manage nicely if an SX4 is doing the job :)

Am I the only one who thinks there's not much luxury in that. Its like driving an unlaid section of railway line. Don't get me wrong, great yoke to work, just awful as a car.

Segment by segment it would be a Honda CRV , a Range Rover Evoque and a Landrover Discovery for me.

tha landcruiser drives as it should, a high ground clearance offroad ready 4x4 , its not going to drive like a car,

with the exception of the discovery the other 2 mentioned are effectively awd cars , the discovery drives like a 4x4 too although a load of fancy terrain control systems make the drive a bit better.

Subaru Outback a slight curved ball but well worth a look at IMO.

If you're looking for luxury and 4x4 capability the Toyota Landcruiser Amazon is the only machine, they cannot be faulted!

kia sorrento.leather seats , full auto, etc ultra reliable machine.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,705 ✭✭✭✭Tigger

    luxury and kia ?
tbh i think there is a communication issue here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,280 ✭✭✭✭Eric Cartman

toyota landcruiser (non amazon) , dacia duster, kia sorento, quasqai's and other lark - none of them are luxury.

realistically your thinking of bmw, land rover, mercedes, volvo, lexus, porsche only. (and im going to leave lexus out as the rx400h and 450h arent up to much)

Had one of these as a hire car recently in florida.

Fine car did not have much use for the hill descent button.

Mitsubishi Shogun. Basically a well-spec'ed, luxurious big brother to the Pajero.

And well able, even when a bit more extreme offroad.

    /M

A Range Rover, probably the best for comfort and 4x4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,797 ✭✭✭scwazrh

Volvo xc70 crossover , as nice a car as an e class and an ideal soft off reader like the Suzuki , The slightly higher seating is ideal for people of his age

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

    Honda HRV.

or an Audi Allroad for that sake. Similar setup to the XC70.

Shogun and Pajero are the same vehicle... Badged as a shogun in the UK with a better spec than Irish Pajeros. Still not luxury though...for those that think a landcruiser has a harsh ride, then try the Mitsubishi...

Luxury and 4x4 generally don't work. Exceptions are the LC amazon and Range Rover... But they are serious machines... I don't think the OP is looking for those really

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone!

    I should have added that he's a doctor, so I think the Hummer is a no-go :P
He only wants the 4x4 option as he lives in the country and needs to get to work / patients even when there's heavy snow, hence why the Merc isn't ideal.

I'll take a skim over them all today :)

An x5 should fit the bill, look great, drive well, luxurious and plenty good off road.

Not necessarily the particular one I've linked.

    Hi,

If he is worried about snow and ice etc then proper winter tyres make an enormous difference so 4x4 may not be necessary?

IMHO Luxury + 4x4 = Range Rover (Vogue).

Having said that, I have an X5 which I bought about 3 weeks before the first of the really big snows we had a few years ago and even on summer tyres it was fine, no problems anywhere, but again winter tyres would make it better (just can't afford them!). X5 is a very comfy place to be in all conditions and handles well as a car on the road under normal conditions too.

I've heard good things about the subaru outbacks too, just not terribly luxurious.

    Agree.
    Range Rover Sport or

if budget allows the proper Full Fat is the only place to be.
    Everything else is second best.
