It could never work. Pat (Rabbitte) is a dreamer from the West and Arlene (Foster) a practical girl from Fermanagh. And so it is too with broadband mapping North and South. Pat dreams of things that cannot be and says why not.; Arlene doesn't do that kind of thing.

    Platform|Ireland(NBS service area)|Northern Ireland (2Mb/s buffer zone)
    VDSL|n/a|1.5kms
    FWA|12kms*|5kms
    Mobile (data) |4.5kms|1km
    DSL|4.5kms|3.5kms

"We are also aware that mobile phones can deliver broadband services. Having reviewed the coverage maps of a number of operators we have reached the conclusion that to deliver a reliable broadband service with current technology, users need to be closer than 1 kilometre from a mast. "
