timing belt - 55k since last change.

    Just putting this out there, (car is a 05 seat altea 2.0TDI 268,000km)the interval on my car says change every 125,000 km I changed the belt in December 2010 and have covered 88k km since. I was going to get the clutch + DMF done soon as a preventative measure so might be worth doing timing belt also instead of having to take another day off this year, would there be any cost saving doing this in one go, or would this be a false economy in the long run.

    It's every 4 years or 80,000 miles, whichever is soonest.
    88k km is 54k miles

    So it'd be due next year either way.

    There is no labour saving in doing the belt at the same time as the flywheel, however a garage may still knock a few quid off if doing both jobs together.

    Why are you doing the flywheel as a preventative measure? Would you not just wait until it gets noisy? Chances are the belt will be due by then as well.

    Your clutch and DMF could outlast your ownership of the car. Waste of money in getting them done now. When it goes it will make noise, or clutch start slipping. As long as you don't just leave it, little or no further damage will be done.

    This thread should be shown to a few of the anti diesel crowd in the main forum, a lot of thrm insist if you buy a diesel the DMF etc etc will pack up after 20k miles.

    I doubt anybody claimed it would go after 20k. do you think that this is the original one.
    like everybody said wait till it gives trouble. it wont let you down without warning

    what are the tell tail symptoms of it going, car drives fine there is an occasional slight knocking sound from around the back of the gear box when I press the accelerator when in first gear taking off, but it rarely happens, once or twice a week max.

    I wouldn't be surprised, I hit a curb fairly hard a few weeks ago in the little bit of snow we got and the car hasn't been the same since.
