    Hey

I'm making my plans for Thursday nights trip to see Iron Man 3 :D
Does anyone know are there any cinemas that are as nice as the Mezz in Dundrum, in the city center?

The Mezz (Movies@Dumdrum) is really nice, but its a bit of a pain to get in and out of. Specifically what would be nice is
    Some semi decent food
    Leather and\or reclining seats
A bar which you can bring drinks into the movie with you.

It sounds alot, but the mezz has all three of above.

Maybe if Terrence Malick makes Ironman 4.....

Harsh TheIrishGrover, the Light House is definitely a good bit more laid back when it comes to screenings, don't think they take themselves as seriously as somewhere like the IFI. I see that the former will be showing Star Trek, unlike the IFI.

True. They showed Prometheus there as well, along with a few other more mainstream things. The IFI is very stuffy alright. There's something slightly elitist about it as well, and the prices in the film shop are just outrageous.

Ah no, I'm just joking. I love the Lighthouse

I like the main screen in the savoy a lot.

It's not elitism as much as wanting to screen films that are not playing everywhere else in the city. I certainly wouldn't want them to forfeit showing a great new Japanese/Korean movie in favor of the latest superhero film, it entirely defeats the purpose of such a cinema. Especially when I can just walk 10 minutes and catch Iron Man in the Savoy.

Besides they have screened huge hits in the past. Stuff like Inception, The Social Network, The King's Speech and The Impossible. Also has a horror fest every year and last year screened the likes of Die Hard, The Matrix, Terminator 2 and The Raid as part of an action season. Their monthly schedule is broader than every other cinema's and to call them elitist for wanting to show interesting independent movies seems a little reductive to me.

To answer the OP's question though: Odeon Point Village is quite nice. Just be sure to book ahead. :)

You've misinterpreted me, or perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I don't think the IFI itself is elitist. I'm speaking more about the attitude in there, particularly amongst the patrons. I find it a very snobbish and unfriendly place. I think that is also true of the staff to a certain extent, although that's a refection on them as individuals rather than the IFI itself.

But I love what the IFI are doing, let me be absolutely clear about that. I prefer the overall experience in the Lighthouse, but I spend most of my time and money in the IFI. I owe an enormous debt to their choice of programming, and long may it continue. I just find that independent cinemas, like record stores, can be very stuck up places, and in my opinion the IFI is worse than the Lighthouse in that regard.

That's just my experience. If you feel differently then I'm happy to hear it.

But I stand by my criticism of the shop. It's extortionate.

Understood, I find the staff friendly enough but I've often had issues with other patrons there too. It does seem like every second film I see there is plagued by some bloke sitting in the back audibly sneering at the film by sighing, groaning and breathing through their nose constantly. It's deeply irritating and I'm not even sure some realize that they're doing it.

That and the legroom in screens 1 and 2 are my only problems with the cinema really. Even the film store isn't too expensive with membership discount. I've gotten some pretty great films on blu-ray there for 12/13 euro.

I don't think any of the cinemas in Dublin are elitist enough these days :pac: that's an argument for another thread...

The Savoy is the only major cinema worth nothing other than the Lighthouse IMO. Find all the multiplexes to be an altogether inferior experience, extra legroom be damned.

I can just about handle rude patrons in a commercial cinema, but when you're sitting down to an obscure black & white French movie, you kinda presume everyone in the room knows how to conduct themselves in a cinema. Again, that's not a reflection of the IFI itself, but I just seem to encounter more of those people there. But that could be down to any number of variables. The location is great for business, but it probably makes it easier for people to walk in on a whim, when they're not really in the right headspace to sit down respectfully in a dark room.

I'll really have to become a member. I've had the form filled in on a number of different occasions, but never handed it in for one reason or another. I'm glad to hear there's some deals to be had in the shop. I'm used to paying a premium for independent stuff, and that's fine. But some times it's over the top. The books in particular. Again, I understand that there's a mark-up on these products because of the limited circulation. But if something's 200% dearer than it is online I tend to feel I'm being ripped off, notwithstanding the savings you'd expect to make online.
