Five people have been killed in a shooting at an apartment complex south of Seattle, including a suspect who was shot by officers.

Police say officers responded to a 9:30pm emergency call of shots being fired at the complex in Federal Way.

In addition to the possible suspect, the victims also include three other men and one woman.

Arriving police spotted two injured men on the ground in a parking lot and one of them reached for a gun as the officers moved in to assist them, a spokeswoman for Federal Way police says.

    Officers then opened fire.

The man was killed but it wasn't immediately clear if it was from police gunfire.

The other man on the ground and another man in the parking lot were found dead.

In a search of the complex, police found yet another dead man in one apartment and a dead woman in another.

There was no immediate word what set off the gunfire.

America is having a terrible time, condolonces to all affected.

All the rhetoric is going to start again. The gun nuts. The video game/music/books blamers. The vested interests etc.

It seems like the more coverage these events get the more it encourages copycat style killings.

Probably because it doesn't make it into international paper?

Now that you mention it, the police over there do consider vehicles to be lethal weapons.

Theres theories that the glorification of these incidents by the media does indeed encourage copycat or others who want the same attention

Because the global media know it's difficult to prevent car crashes. It shouldn't be difficult to lower gun crime, but we all know that wont happen with the lobbyists.

It'd actually be quite easy to prevent car crashes.
    Ban cars.

Its the backlash thats the reason cars aren't banned.
Same reason why guns aren't banned.

    Gun owners are voters too!

Ffs - a week from hell for the American people.

    Rip to the victims.
It's another shooting in the sense that it's another car crash. It's not unexpected or rare.

Back in 1993 gun deaths in the US were about 100 per day (roughly a years worth of the Troubles in Northern Ireland per day)

And unless things change they may be headed back there.

American Gun Deaths to Exceed Traffic Fatalities by 2015 Shooting deaths in 2015 will probably rise to almost 33,000, and those related to autos will decline to about 32,000, based on the 10-year average trend.

    ...
About 85 Americans are shot dead daily -- 53 of them suicides. Every day, one of those killed by firearms is 14 or younger.
    ...
Wintemute said more than 200 people go to U.S. emergency rooms every day with gunshot wounds

BTW Vietnam was 58,282 US deaths.

All we see here are the more notable events, and then only when mass shootings are publicised or on slow news days.

Also , and lets be 110% clear here

The correlation between copy cat killers and wide spread reporting of the news is so strong that the media probably have to accept some of the blame for this incident.

Taking a gun and shooting others when feeling angry/sad/frustrated or whatever is increasingly being seen as a legitimate way to 'vent' in the U.S. as such incidents are hardly rare anymore. Fúcked up society.
