    Hi,

I have searched these forums and the web itself for potential options and although there are courses out there, i just cant afford what they are looking for....If possible could anyone please advise if they know of any AFFORDABLE mountain navigation courses, around the €70 mark, I simply dont have the €130 cheapest I can find course offered...if anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. I've done a fair bit of hiking but Id like to take on the higher peaks of Ireland and be well prepared in advance of this.

    Thanks!

    Muff.

Did you check with IMRA (www.imra.ie) or Orientering Ireland (http://www.orienteering.ie) if they have such a course?
Their events are usually very affordable.

Mountain navigation isn't that difficult to master. The best way is just get out there with a map and compass and navigate. I use East West Maps as they've mapped alot of trails. There's enough info on the web to give you a basic understanding of navigating.

+1 to getting out there yourself and giving it a go, in good weather of course to master the basics first.

I used You-tube for reading bearings, plenty of tutorials on there too.

    Hi all,

Thanks very much to you all for responses and advice. I did initially think it seemed like a bit of an extravagance and a little bit unnecessary and I do have some basic knowledge of compass use and navigation but it was just this forum i stumbled upon that sort of convinced me to look into doing a proper course:

    http://forum.climbing.ie/index.php?topic=2687.0

The thread poster seems like a fairly experienced hiker/climber that got a lot out of a course. I thought the additional knowledge on emergency situations and the likes would be useful.

I am based in Co. Wicklow so I thought it would be handy enough to get a course, but at €130 a course I can't afford it right now...seems a bit steep, no pun intended. After some searching I did see one of those groupon offers for a course for 50% off at €75 but that was last month, so I might hold off and wait for another one of these to come up, unless anyone has any other suggestions.

    Thanks again,

    Muff.
