    Hi all,

recently developed shin splints while playing astro to keep fit after I broke my nose during the season.
has anyone ever suffered from these?
they're extremely painful and I don't want to deal with it all summer.
If anyone had any tips that would be fantastic.

Same thing happened to me a long time ago. Changing my runners helped I think.

Went away when I went back to playing rugby.

Remember reading something about shin splints being due to the ground being too hard. The softer ground of real grass is ment to make them just go away so maybe find a field to jog round or something :)

got them about 3 years ago maybe more, was advised to get a set of chiropractic insoles....however these cost a fortune got a pair of cheap ones in lifestyle and wore them in my runners for about a year and havent had a problem since!

I got these, and tried playing through them. Terrible idea.

Eventually took a month off, went back with light jogging and new boots. Also took a look at technique in running, and haven't had a problem since.

I felt the biggest aid was stepping back, and starting from scratch again, and not pushing myself too hard when I could run again.

This happened to me a few weeks ago as well. If you're playing in normal runners, go to a sports shop and get your stride/gait analysed as you may need different shoes.

There are a few stretches which can help. Standing on toes for 30 seconds at a time for example. Also raising your foot while keeping your heel on the floor when you're sitting. You'll feel the strain up your shin which is what you want. You can also tape them to take the strain off which does seem to work for pain relief.

The only other thing really is rest for a week or two and ice regularly throughout the day and some ibuprofen for swelling. When you get back to it, if your stride and runners were the problem, they (fingers crossed) shouldn't come back.

    Good luck.

I got othotics when I was wearing studs on mainly hard ground and they cleared the shin splints up quickly. The great outdoors will assess your foot and suggest a premade insole that will cost you 50eur and will help. Orthotics are quite a bit more expensive

As per charter, no medical advise should be requested/given. OP, you should request the advise of a professional before requesting advise on a forum. Thanks.
