    Hi Anspinc,
Croatia is really beautiful. I travelled to Split and then to a few of the Islands a few years ago and loved it. Expect the weather to be between 20 - 25 degrees. It's not a scorcher around that time of year but depends what you are both comfortable with. This could be warm enough!!
I can't recommend a place to stay I'm afraid as when we headed there we slummed it on a sail boat for a week!

The south of the country will be the hottest. We started in Split and travelled to the various islands (Milna, Hvar, Korcula, Dubrovnik, Mljet & Makarska). Each of them were uniquely beautiful. We used a company called Topdeck. Might be worth checking their site out for pictures or as a starting point and get some ideas!
Dubrovnik seems to be the most popular at the moment and has some high end hotels.
We also travelled to Zagreb in the north which is the capital, whilst it was lovely it is not a patch on the scenic views you will encounter in the south.

    Hope this helps!

I've visited almost every country in Europe, and Croatia is probably my favourite: excellent food and wine, lots of history, Mediterranean weather and nice people. I holidayed in Dubrovnik, probably the classiest place in Croatia, and a little more expensive than elsewhere. Excellent restaurants. If you're into touring, I did a great day trip to Montenegro taking in Cetinje, Kotor and Budva. Another to Mostar in Bosnia. Makarska is more honky tonk, for young people in season, but I was there en famille out of season and found it very satisfactory. I did day trips to Sarajevo, Split and some of the islands. The islands are quiet if you like that, and very pretty, especially Korcula and Mljet. Another time I daytripped into Northern Croatia from Slovenia, to Rovinj and Porec, and to be honest I much preferred further south. I know nothing of Zagreb.
A word of caution: The people are wonderful, provided you don't go remotely near political issues. Memories of the wars in Yugoslavia are still very raw.

Thanks folks. Really useful information and it's nice to know about the day trips. We are planning on going for 3 weeks mid sept. It sounds like the weather might be a mixed bag at that time of year. 20 - 25 degrees sounds good to me, but I am wondering if it goes lower at that time of year or if it gets cold at night. chances of rain etc.

Love Croatia. Was in Zagreb the capital and thought it was amazing.
Never got to go to the seaside but from talking to other travellers and seeing their photos it looks amazing!

The scenery throughout Yugoslavia is stunning. Montenegro is probably the best.

Croatia is quality. We went 2 years ago, flew into Dubrovnik, stayed for 4 nights and got a bus to Split(about 4 hours), you could rent a car also, the drive is all along the coast. Stayed in Split for a few nights and went to Hvar, Hvar is amazing and a must if going to Croatia in my opinion.

A word of caution - the first time I went to Croatia it was mid-September, and the place was mostly shut down. It was very end-of-season time, especially on the islands. Everything was shut by 9pmish, and a lot of restaurants weren't open at all.

Now that was 10 years ago, so maybe things have changed, but it'd be worth checking out. I'm just wondering what time of year the other posters went at?

Croatia (the Dalmatian coast is all I've seen, but I've seen a lot of it!) is fantastic, I couldn't recommend it highly enough and there's loads of stuff within travelling distance that other posters have mentioned. I never managed to get to Montenegro but it's supposed to be stunning. I'd second Mostar and Sarajevo as well worth a visit.

But just be wary of the possibility of a fairly sudden end to the season.

ETA - there were also some fairly epic rain/lightning storms during the week we were there - the weather can be very changeable indeed! It was mild enough, not quite sunbathing weather, but not freezing either.

    Thanks Heidi.

That's interesting about the weather and the end of season. I would love to here all your thoughts on those two points.

And thanks for all the posts about the landscape, towns and coastlines. It does sound amazing

Echoing what Heidi said be sure to check if the island ferries will still be operating. Check to see when the summer timetables change over to less frequent winter runs, particularly to the smaller islands.

I and other friends have visited in september over the last few years and things are open etc. Busy enough in fact. I think its the best time of year, still warm but not as manic with tourists. Im going again this september too. October and things will have wound down alright

Keeping an eye on this thread as thinking of going in September as well for 7/9 days. Thinking of Dubrovnik, or Cavtat, would we be better to hire a car or could we use public transport? We normally do a kid friendly holiday, but on our own this time so we can do whatever we feel!

I would go ferry for the craic, should only be 40mins and you would get nice views. I wouldnt bother renting a car for such a small distance

It's coming in at €1,400 B&B for Hotel Croatia Cavtat which is near Dubrovnik up on Expedia for 1wk on Sept 20 and transfers are in or around €20 each way from the airport. Have a look online.

Game of thrones could be filming there round then, it scuppered our plans anyway as prices were so high

Ya that week suits me and the other half so maybe will have to look somewhere else, think that's too steep anyway

Would October be a good month to go? I seen in a previous post, in September a lot of places would be closed or close early.

October is a perfect time to go if you're looking for a quiet break with nothing open, should be even less open by then.

Which part of the country you plan to visit?

Not sure yet, perhaps the coastline. Only going for a few days so wouldn't be able to take a lot in.

I visited Croatia (Dubrovnik) in the month of October and most things were open and operating. Maybe it was because it was Dubrovnik though.
