Focus operating temperature

    1. Since I got my focus I have noticed the operating temperature seems abit low in the fact the gauge never reaches 90 degree c. Below is a picture of what it is normally at. I'm just wondering does this look normal for a focus 1.6tdci. I've never had one so have nothing to compare it too. I know the outside temperature sensor is faulty and I plan on replacing this but am I right in thinking this has no bearing on the engine temperature?
    Thanks for your help.

    2. Also can anyone tell me where the pollen cabin air filter is on a focus 2007 I want to have a look and see what state it's in what is the recommend interval to change them at?

    3. When I got the car checked over a few weeks ago the garage said the tie rod ends were worn and would need changing by the next service. I've noticed the last few weeks when driving over speed bumps even slowly there is a slight squeak from the drivers side could this be the tie rod end or is it something else. Also when parking with the window down I notice a noise when turning the wheel only to the right it only happens once when turning to the right ie not all the time. Again would tie rod ends have anything to do with this or is it something else.

    4. I was looking at changing the rear wiper. It currently has a 400mm wiper. Yet all the online stores seem to recommend a 350mm is it ok to continue just using a 400mm or is there a reason the 350mm is recommended.

Sorry for all the questions just said I'd ask a few at the same time. Feel free just to answer one or whatever. Thanks for the help. It's a mark 2 2007 focus 1.6tdci 90ps. Thanks.

I can help with one of your questions as I've done it before. This pic is of a lhd focus, but the pollen filter is in the same location.

I'm driving car at the moment with that engine and it does that from time to time, but not always like yours. I reckon it's the dpf, rear window heater comes on too when it does it. I think it's just trying to raise the revs a little to increase the exhaust temperature.

Might be the thermostat needs to be replaced

1: Did you change the thermo since you got it?

    Hal1 has covered 2 :D

3: Without hearing the noise or seeing the condition of the suspension components it's hard to diagnose. For example my 406 developed an annoying rattle at the front. Turned out to be a loose R clip on the driveshaft nut cover....!

4: Can you get a refill?

No I haven't done anything to the thermostat it has been like that since I got it. I suppose its still reading 85 degree or so and wouldn't ever go below that really. As for 3 the garage said all suspension was perfect bar the tie rod ends that's why I was thinking optimistically it is them but would they make noise. As for 4 what do you mean by refill. The wiper is not that bad just something ill change over the next few months. Thanks for the help.

I'd get a new thermo cracked in so. One of the first things I change in a car that comes in here :)

As for refills, this is what I mean. Far cheaper than a new arm

I got a brand new Focus back in '05 & the temp gauge was like that, i asked about it in the garage & they said it is normal. I drove it for just over a year without trouble. My current car is the same way too & never misses a beat.

I never seen them refills before good idea. Where can they be got. How would I know it's not just the coolant temperature sensor or is it defiantly a thermostat.

That's what I was wondering is that suppose to be the reading. If your car was like that brand new then maybe that's just the way the engine is set up in them. Thanks I was unsure the fact I've never owned a focus before.

You can get those refills in Halfords, relatively inexpensive :)

I'm looking at the mileage, your van is 07 yes? Maybe it's just me but after 70k miles I'd be looking at changing the thermo, goodness knows how it was treated before you got it

Nice one ill definitely look into the refills. Sorry if its a stupid question but what reason would you have to change a thermostat obviously if the temperature is way out. But why would you change it with mileage?

Thanks everyone for all the help. One final question what does tie rod ends actually do I know there obviously part of the front suspension but what do they do? And can they squeak make noise if there worn ? Thanks.

Tie rod ends are not part of the suspension but rather is part of the steering system. If you took out a Tie rod end and went to drive the car, the wheel would turn any way it wanted to. That is why when a tie rod end is gone you feel it through the steering wheel.

And fwiw my wife has a Focus II too and the temp gauge is always like yours. We bought it with 90k kms on it and it currently has 260k kms so I wouldn't worry about it!
