Stratford Upon Avon

My Mum has always been mad to go to Stratford Upon Avon and I'm thinking of organising a treat for her either later this year or the start of next year - so just kind of looking around now.

Anyone been and can recommend how to get there.

Obviously my English Geography is worse than I thought as I believed it easier to go to London to get there. However, I now see that Birmingham is the nearest airport.

Where to go from there though? I'm stumped. Bus? Train? Duration? etc.

    Any guidance greatly appreciated!

Birmingham is one of the few airports I know which is actually on the mainline rail network but there is no direct service to Stratford so the rail option will involve getting a train into Birmingham city and then out again to Stratford or from the airport to Leamington Spa, then change for Stratford.

This means that it's a toss-up between the train (c. 2 hrs, 1 or 2 stops) or the bus (1 hr 50m, one stop), check out the options here and bear in mind when checking the rail option that the railway station in the airport is called 'Birmingham International'.......

I did it last year for a weekend break. Flight into Birmingham and then on the train as above. You arrive in from the airport into New St Station then its a short walk to Moore St Station where you hop on the train straight to SUA.

See www.thetrainline.com for train times and prices.

Its a lovely place and it was all straightforward enough to do. We hired a row boat and had some fun on the river and also some good pub grub. Great little street with shops to mooch about in the afternoon. I was suprised how pretty it was. Weather was also lovely when I was there last June.

It is a nice town to walk around. Needless to say the shops are full of souvenirs involving you-know-who!
