MS SQL Server Service Manager Question(s)

I recently re-installed Business Contact Manager including BCM Manager Update for MS Outlook 2003. Part of that installation necessitated the installation of additional features - MS Office SP1 and MS SQL Server Service Manager all of which are included on the installation disk and without which BCM would not open etc. MS SQL Server Service Manager Version 8 appears on the task bar as "Not Connected - \\". When I open the application there is no Server or Services listed in the drop-down menu etc. I do not remember having installed this when I originally installed MS BCM Manager and certainly the application did not show up on my task bar before this. I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 on a stand-alone laptop. My questions therefore are:

What purpose does MS SQL Server Service Manage fulfill on my PC?
Do I need MS SQL Server Service Manager on my PC?
If not, how can I delete it - it is not showing up in the Programs file in Control Panel?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If BCM requires SQL server, uninstalling it will more than likely leave it useless. A lot of software requires a SQL DB engine and in most cases SQL express is used and does it's own thing in the background, have a look at running Processes and you should see MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS or something to that effect. If you are trying to connect to the SQL express instance you will need SQL server Management Studio installed to do anything.

Thanks for your contribution uch - the fact that it appears on the status bar as 'not connected - \\' would suggest to me that is not running even in the background? The SQL Server Service Manager icon certainly did not appear on the status bar prior to the re-installation and I do not recall installing it previously from the BCM installation CD.
