    How much can you spend?

It depends - if it was good quality I wouldn't mind spending a little more. At present I download songs to Sansa Clip and play through car radio from an FM transmitter but its rubbish quality.
    What do you suggest

I'd be keeping the original unit and getting a connects2 iPod/USB adaptor.

Aftermarket headunits mostly look awful in VWs

    Ok thanks for advice.
Can u explain a little more - what exactly is this - where do i get one - what brand -

A lead that plugs other back of the original unit and allows a USB/iPod to be plugged in and controlled from the headunit.

I won't recommend a specific one, but a good few people here know their Golfs and will steer you right.

Does the radio need to be coded after connecting the connect?
