I live quite near to the PPT entrance on the Heuston side but have never seen a single train go through it. I know it's used largely for infrequent freight, but wouldn't know how to find out when these trains run. Is there any time at all you can be guaranteed (or even likely) to see a train using the tunnel? I'd love to see that.

There would be no freights going through it at the weekends. All you might catch at weekends would be empty railcar stock movements and maybe a loco swap for the Enterprise. If you are lucky you can even catch a 29000 DMU on a DART drag to or from Inchicore any day of the week and generally in the early mornings to 1-2pm.

During the week there are I think 5 IWT freights each way. I'm not sure of the new IWT runnings but I think they run 3 days a week and sometimes up to 2 trains per day. I know there is a morning departure from North Wall anytime from 10-11am but the days I'm not sure of.
The empty returns usually arrive back in the afternoon to late evening depending if it get delayed which often happens.

Actually just going back over some observations from the start of this month the IWT liners are alot more frequent.

On Wednesday the 3/4/13, there was 2 freights from Ballina to Northwall and 1 from Northwall to Ballina. 3 different locos used.

On Thursday the 4/4/13, there was 1 freight from Ballina to Northwall and 2 from Northwall to Ballina. The same 3 201 class locos from Wednesday working the return services.

There is weekly ICR stock movements, happen at all different times but lunchtime mid week is when I saw a few. The IWT liner to Ballina goes through at lunchtime to, leaves port around 12.00.
