NCT and tyres

My car is due an NCT next weekend. Today I was checking over a few things when I noticed that my tyres are getting fairly close to the wear bars. I'd say within 1mm. Under normal circumstances, I would run these for a couple more months (right to the wear bars) and then change them.
I would say that it could be borderline whether they would pass the NCT due to the wear.
If it does get picked up, and the car fails due to worn tyres, would the 'retest' be just a visual, or would the car have to go back onto the lift (and incur the retest fee) so that the tyres would get a closer inspection?
