Suzuki Liana - engine light on

My parents have a suzuki liana and the engine light is on. Its been on for a while but the car seems fine. Will this process to check the codes by shorting terminals on the diagnostics port work on that car? The warning light actually turns off from time to time for a short period. Today for example, it went off when I was driving to get it NCT'd (good timing) but I want to sort the issue. Thanks in advance

2003. Solid engine light. My guess is an oxygen sensor as had a similar problem on a corolla I had. Just seeing if its possible to do something like shorting 2 terminals to get a reading. Thanks.

The terminals thing is mainly for older cars, for your 2003 you need a code reader (a guess) and you need a mechanic or dealer for that.
    But try this out first.

I don't know if this would pertain to your car, but try putting the fuel cap on and off, had this happen on a toyota camry once, cap wasnt on correctly and it was venting fuel vapors causing check engine light to come on.
