It happened to me at exact same time of year in 2011, out since the Feb so I was driving for 2 months with no licence, it was a long time since 2001 and forgot about it, I just renewed as normal with no problems. You'll get the new licence now so not sure if theres any new procedures for that. I've 8 years of the pink slip left!

    How to renew
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/travel_and_recreation/motoring_1/driver_licensing/renewing_a_full_driving_licence.html
There's a thread about becoming an organ donor, that way you're sure to get the new one.

It's a full licence yeah? If so I wouldn't think it's a big deal for insurance, just renew it asap anyway though.
Have a look at the T&C of your insurance policy. Does it state "current, valid licence"?

    I was 7 years

licence expired in 2005 as it was a 10 year one, but for some reason on the paper licence it was stamped saying it would expire in 2022

was in front of the court and it got struck out too

Most Licence issuing councils are experiencing large backlogs issuing new licences at the moment, so what if your licence is due to expire/expires while waiting for your new one?

Had to check this out personally this week as my licence expired while waiting on a renewal:

    1. Ensure the issuing council has your application. Phone them.
    2. If it's being processed and it expires during this time - it's fine.
    3. If you get stopped by the Gardai or need to produce your licence, then request a covering letter from the issuing council otherwise you may risk penalty points and/or a fine. Produce this at your nominated Garda Station.
    4. Insurance: You are fully covered under your policy terms provided your licence expired while being renewed even though you may not be in possession of your new licence. (Aviva - 18.07.13)

This sort of info should be available on line but it's not!
