I'm setting up an old-ish eMac.
Have installed OSX 10.5 on it which runs fine.
However there is an issue with the admin account.
I can login using the admin account credentials when booting up the desktop but when I want to change any system settings and it asks me to re-authorise as admin those same credentials that I logged on with earlier are refused.

Not being an OSX expert I'm at a loss here.
    Can anyone help?

I assume you've ruled out something silly like caps lock being left on?

Are you sure the account you are logging in as is an admin account? Are there other accounts on the system?

Yup but I did check though ;-)

Yes, it is the admin account. There are other accounts on the system but I double checked in the system preferences and the account I am using is the admin account.
However I also cannot make any changes to the system preferences as it also asks me for the admin login details.
    All very strange...

    boot to recovey mode
select utilities-terminal - write resetpassword in the terminal box
reset the ACL for the user a/c and perhaps change the PW also

This will help reset your password - as long as you still have the OSX Disc:

    - Start from your Mac OS X 10.5 Install DVD. (You do not need to install Leopard again.)

    - From the Utilities menu, choose Reset Password (do not choose Firmware Password Utility).

    - Follow the onscreen instructions to reset the admin password
-- In more detail: Select the name of the drive that Mac OS X is installed on, select the user account (i.e John Smith) from drop down menu, type the password in the first field, re-enter the password in the second field, then click the Save button.

    - Reset ACL on the next section of the dialog box

    - Restart your mac

Once reset again, You shouldn't have any authentication issues within the operating system.
