There are two things here, first up is the technical or mechanical side of things.
I had a service done on my car 2 weeks ago (2007 VW Golf 2.0 tdi) and when it was about to leave the garage the fuel pump 'went' on it. The lad ordered and got a new fuel pump installed and the car was fine for a couple of days. Thing 'went' again, I've since been waiting 11 days for a new one to come in. They put an old one in yesterday and while driving tonight, you got it, it went again. So issue 1, is the fuel pump the problem here or is there more to it?

2nd thing is, the garage my car has been lying in the last 11 days said they can't provide me with a car, so the 1 day I was allocated a hire car via my insurance aside, I've been paying for a hire car to the tune of €274. This is on top of the €180 for the so far non existant fuel pump. Are they liable for any of this, ie can I claim any of the above money I've paid out for hire car back from them or is it just my hard luck???

I went into them on Monday and told them its not on and I need this sorted in the next 2 days. He called me on Wednesday to apologise and told me he now has a car available for me til mine is ready. When I went over (after giving the hire car back) he told me they just going to try the 2nd hand pump first. I'm so angry here and don't want to let emotions get in the way, but if I'd seen him tonight I'd have went through him for a shortcut

    Anyone?
Is there a good chance that the problem is more than a fuel pump, and am I in a position to claim back from them or not at all???

Lubo, I doubt very much that you can claim for the rental, would be staggered if you could, and the route to do so, through a solicitor would cost you more.

Re your problem , you are in the horrrible situation of having a hard to diagnose problem, it seems to me to be that the Pump was not the problem.(you do not state if it was the injector pump or a fuel pump from the tank)
the mystery to me is how did the car start again if a part that was not faulty was being replaced each time. methinks there is a fuel blockage somewhere and re bleeding after the @new@ pump was fitted , got it going, but only for the problem to return

    Regards Rugbyman

Yeah as above, the garage will not have to pay for your hire car.

However, I would be pressing them for an answer, another fuel pump is going to fail again. Something else is wrong, hopefully something simple like a relay.

Funny oldmanmondeo mentions a relay, last year my car would sometimes fail to start, leave it a while come back it would start, was told by garage needs new fuel pump, told a friend of problem ,he said, you have tried replacing the relay?
replaced relay, car runs fine since, lucky i didnt go garage route.

If that works for OP, where do I send the labour invoice? ;)

When I was towed to garage first time I remember the Guy who towed it mentioned the word Relay to the Guy in the garage.
What's the deal with a relay??

Excuse the spelling, I've been out celebrating my team winning the league all day
