Surely there is a way around it. Whats the criteria for taxing a taxi

At minimum you need a taxi licence issued by the National Transport Authority.
Also you'll need to have insurance covering its use as a taxi.

In short you need to be a taxi driver/operator.

Do you think it would work if I got someone with a taxi licence to go in and say they just bought the car and want tax it before they send log book off to change name?

Er no if only it was that easy. You would be breaking the law too btw.

Not unless that person was able to prove they've also insured the vehicle. And surely not worth getting two people prosecuted when/if it's found out.

What about if I changed ownership to my maye (a taxi driver) then it would be in his name and he has a taxi licence. Could tax it and then transfer it back. Do you know would there be anymore needed other than taxi licence and car in his name

Sure just don't pay tax at all. It'd be more or less the same thing as what you want to do.

Your problem is not going to happen on the day that you process the paperwork, it's going to happen on the day that an eagle-eyed Garda (or Traffic Warden?) notices the cut price disk but no stickers on the door, meter, yellow sticker on the windscreen etc. etc.

Then you'll probably be experiencing somewhere between a fine and car confiscation.

You may as well not tax it at all, save yourself a further €94...

I get what your saying but hypetacily if I bought a car in the morning and didnt realise it was regestered as a taxi. As I have already done. And the car had a years tax on it already. Whats the process then? Like what would I have to do to be legal from that point of view

My understanding of it is that in order to be fully legal you'll need to fill out a declaration form available from the motor tax office notifying them of the change of class i.e from taxi to private.

And would I have re tax it for the year even tho its already taxed. And whats to say I just didnt notice. Like if mine had tax I could have easily thrown the log book in a drawer and not checked it. Think its worth a try. Cant really prove otherwise

    ignorance is not a defense.

I get that but if the car had tax thats exactly what would have happened. I would have no need to go near d log book until d tax ran out ya no

Look, most of us will say no you are not supposed to tax it as a taxi if it isn't a taxi, that's just common sense and legal btw. ;)

Chances are you're going to go right ahead and tax it anyway so I bid you the best of luck but come across and eagle-eyed Garda and you may find yourself in some bother.

To summarise, you shouldn't tax it as a PSV if it's not one, it's illegal and you may end up with the car being confiscated and getting a hefty fine. Or pay the private rate and have nothing to worry about. A simple choice really. :)

Yes, it'd be required by law to tax it at the new rate from date of purchase if it's going to be on the road.

If you were stopped by a Garda though and it ended in court, pleading that you hadn't noticed might not be accepted by a judge.

Even if you get caught with the wrong tax, what's gonna happen.? Slap on the wrist, and a small fine. A fine nowhere near the 700 a year to tax it.
I'd say go for it, and hope for the best.

Fairly sure it's against the charter to advocate breaking the law.

OP, I'd be more worried about buying a car I didn't know was a taxi than trying to save on the tax.

Just slapped you on the wrist with a warning for advocating breaking the law.

OP, this isn't the place to find out how to dodge the authorities. Lock.
