Unexpectedly received a few grand back from the tax man.
    Out of the blue.

What should I spend it on.
I own three road bikes and have five sets of wheels (all clinchers).

Be creative in spending my money for me.
Ps - I can't take a cycling holiday, so it should be on equipment.

Wattbike or decent VR trainer for the icy winter days maybe? My current object of desire is this, built up with a decent campag groupset, hub dynamo, racks, and wide ranged gearing suitable for loaded fat boy touring anywhere. Basically, a super solid, reliable, go anywhere lifetime bike. And given Doozeries recent post, I'd probably stick 28mm tyres on for that extra plush comfort factor.

A dirty big full susser mountain bike, heavier the better. Knee pads, full face helmet, 510 shoes, baggy shorts and a rucksack full of water.

And if you're going for the drugs, it would seem like an awful shame not to get some hookers while you're there.

Is there anything to be said for coke and hookers?

Would you believe Ive never taken any drugs? either performance enhancing or recreational....

I wouldn't be an advocate of hookers either ...Meeting women isn't exactly rocket science, but you would be suprised how many poor fellas get it wrong..

So, you're an old guy who rides a heavy steel frame, is supremely aerodynamic with legs that can press twice as much as most elite cyclists and finds picking up women a doddle?

    Mario, is that you?

If you've given track cycling a go and like it (most people who do do;)), a track bike will quickly be on your "want" list, particularly if you can get down to Sundrive for the track league on Wednesday evenings

Alternatively I do think you would make a good TT'er and if you get into it (and are ideally not too far off qualifying for the IVCA as they put on a number of TTs in Leinster during the year) a TT bike is a must ...

More seriously, a Trek Domane 6 Series frameset.

You ride a lot in the country on crap roads. I'd like to know whether this frame is expensively crap or expensively wonderful.

+ 1 on this but I would add demon frameworks and probably put them top of the list.

    | good mountain bike? or maybe a touring bike for a future cycling holiday? A blinged out Surly LHT or a Thorn Sherpa or something?

On the mountian bike side an nice all mountain with a lockout switch for the rear shock will give you lots of options on where you can ride, would even be grand for downhill (but not for racing really).

    Something like this.

Disclaimer, one of my best friends is a Nukeproof sponsored rider and he's been raving about his new Pulse Pro and Mega Pro builds, so I'm jealous.

If I had a couple of grand to blow I'd probably buy an SRM for the craic. After that, not sure. I'd probably splurge on some quality cycling clothing that you'd never otherwise justify - Rapha kit amongst others. Then I'd sell some of the lesser wheels you have and put the rest of the cash into a set of ENVE's or Lightweight's.

Mountain biking, track bikes, touring bikes etc. I'm sure if you had any interest you'd have one already and not three road bikes.

Ouch, I see Firefly charge $200 for internal cable routing on their frames.

Power meter for sure - if you're looking to make improvements in any or all aspects of your cycling, a power meter is the way to go. Though it's not for everyone - you have to invest a bit of time reading up on training with power and then analysing your files, but even if you don't do that, just keeping an eye on your power while you're on the bike can really motivate you to keep pushing hard at times when you might otherwise slack off.

It's gotta be one of these...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,004 ✭✭✭Hmmzis

I'd second the power meter and/or coach options. Nothing will improve your cycling performance like the combination of those two.

Thanks for all of the replies.

    Titanium bike - have one.
Rapha - have loads of it.
MTB/cross bike - less than zero interest.

    Track bike?
TT - maybe. I sort of like short effort stuff. Have done 1 tt this year (slow but loved it). Have 4 more TT's in next few months. I have targets for all of them on the basis of being on a road bike. If I meet or exceed those targets than I may well get a TT bike. Carrot and stick.

At the moment I need new shoes and a helmet, so that will get done (either Gaern or Mavic shoes).

Also need a new saddle on one bike.

Might get some new wheels - but maybe better to wait a bit a just get some class of a TT bike.

Power meter - no. I do not have either the discipline or interest to use one. That would be a waste. I would have data that I would never use. I don't analyse the data that I have, why would I analyse even more?

Touring bike - cant think of anything worse to do on a bike than touring tbh.

Fully faired recumbant - I dont even know what that is.
