Just putting it out there if there are Architectural Techs in a similar position to me and want to meet the register which requires a certain level of qualification and experience for march 2014. I have Diploma in architectural technology and over 4 years experience. Any advice on what are the best steps to take.... Be much appreciated.. :D

The important thing is to establish whether or not you need to register at all. Unless you are self-employed and providing services to the public, these regulations will have no effect on you in the short term. They may in the future limit the extent to which you can progress your career on the basis of your current qualifications.

In short, if you decide that there is a need for you to register you will find it very difficult, if not impossible given the constraints in place, and the scarcity of routes onto the Architects Register.

Architectural technology is not currently a regulated profession in Ireland, and is therefore excluded from the provisions of the Building Control Amendment Regulations. It is not possible to be registered on the basis of your qualification alone.

In order to register as an Architect, you will need to do one of three things. Return to education and become one, undergo technical assessment or pass the Register Admission Exam.

Technical Assessment requires candidates to demonstrate that they have 10 years experience providing services commensurate with that of an Architect prior to the Building Control Act being enacted, and the Architects Register Admission Examination requires evidence of 7 years of similar experience to be submitted at the first stage of the process before you can progress to the next stage. Both have a cost attached.

These routes are under review at present, but it is difficult to predict what, if any changes will ensue as a result of that review.

Re-training may be the only option open to you, but before you embark on any path you should research the routes to registration as an Architect on the RIAI website.
