Can someone explain to me how lists work for getting into a secondary school?

This question is more about secondary school than primary school, but here goes...

I'm a non-Irish national moving to Galway City. My children are primary school aged. I'm trying to figure out how the whole schooling system works, and it's very confusing to me. I know that I need to get them on lists for primary schools asap. What I'm less clear about is whether I also need to be looking ahead when it comes to secondary schools. I've heard tell of some Irish parents putting their children on primary school lists the moment they're born. Is this also true for secondary schools? Do secondary schools, like primary schools, maintain waiting lists and have particular pre-enrolment proceduares/forms?

How do I enrol my child in a post-primary school?
Contact the school directly. You should enrol your child as early as possible as many schools operate a waiting list.

every schools enrolment policy is up to them so you need to contact the school directly.
